Why is feminism always associated with lesbianism. I mean, it's not like feminists want men to be inferior to women, it's just equal treatment that is not only desired, but wanted. I don't understand how that equals to being gay.
And why is being a feminist so bad. I mean, what makes me so inferior where they can call someone a feminist like it's a bad thing. It's not completely illogical that women should be treated the same as men. Yet there's such a divide in our social standing. A man can have sex with a lot of women and be praised for it, yet when a woman sleeps with a lot of men, she's labeled a slut. The situation is the same, yet the judgment is different.
It isn't only in a social context. Women are constantly beat out for jobs by men merely because they might not be able to handle it "emotionally". If she is hard-edged enough for the job, she is labeled a "bitch".
Consider, in third world countries, women are still treated as second rate objects. They are something to own. They are raped, disgraced, and ignored.
On a political stance, the number of female leaders could be held in my hand. The United States of America and China have both never had a female leader. China is a dictatorship, which pretty much explains that anomaly, but the U.S. have no reason to not have a female president. In fact, they are supposed to be the forerunner in all things equal, and yet they have never had a president beside the regular white (normally old) man. Sri Lanka, Peru, Lativa and others have all had female leaders. But their number is nearly nothing when placed next to the number of male leaders. In a world where we boast equality between male and female, the actual situation is far from equal.
There are few female role models. Looking at T.V., movies, books, even comic books, the female role models are weak, horribly cruel, or non-existent. There are few female leads.
Let's examine today's television:
MaleLost (Don't deny it. The males are prominently featured on this show)
Heroes (Two women vs. many men)
24 (Jack Bower, 'nuff said)
How I Met Your Mother
Two and a Half Men
House
Prison Break
The O.C. (Some may argue that Mischa Barton is the lead, but it's about Ryan and Seth)
Studio 60
ER (Mainly testosterone fuels this show, but feel free to repute)
Friday Night Lights
Law and Order
The Office
Scrubs
My Name is Earl
One Tree Hill
Supernatural
Everybody Hates Chris
Smallville
Without A Trace
CSI (:Miami, :New York)
The Unit
Jericho
Criminal Minds
Shark
Numb3rs
The Sopranos
NCIS
Big Love (It's about a man with three wives. Honestly.)
Six Feet Under
Oz
Deadwood
Rome
Entourage (possibly the biggest male stroke ever)
Dexter
and so the list goes on.
Total : 37 FemaleGhost Whisperer (Not that positive)
Close to Home (Haven't really watched it)
Gilmore Girls (Used to be very good, lately, a bunch of weak females. Besides Emily)
Veronica Mar (To me, the most empowering female show on)
Sex and the City
Girlfriends
Reba
Bones
Crossing Jordan
Law and Order : SVU (that's the one that won the award right?)
Medium (sadly)
30 Rock (also very good)
Total : 12 A very unequal ratio to be sure. There are a couple shows out there with equal gendered leads, such as Friends, but the majority of television is male dominated
Even when females are the lead, they sometimes aren't portrayed like men are. It's very sad and I wish that the only thing that defined us was not our romantic relationships.
Although I don't read comic books I understand that females normally have the worst things happen to them, such as rape, dismemberment, assassination of character, etc. In Watchmen, a book I did for English class, there were three females. One, a lesbian who was killed, the others a mother/daughter pair. The mother disregarded her rape, and the daughter seemed to need romance no matter what.
It isn't as though I want everything to be female-centric. I like some of those shows. I just want the genders to be equally portrayed. I don't understand how that is bad and makes me a lesbian.
I should probably explain how these feelings of discontent over the meaning of feminism came about. In my film class, we are making a short movie. I wanted to female to be the lead in the noir film. I argued my point very well, but everyone said it would be "better" with a male lead, merely because having a man as the seductress doesn't make sense. Apparently, only females can seduce people. I find this assumption unfounded and unfair. Men can seduce just as well as women. They just didn't like the idea of a hard-boiled female. They continue to perpetuate a mainly male ideal in media. I talked to my film teacher about this, and asked him how many female lead films he could think that our school had made over the past five years. He could think of one. One film out of at least fifty.
So as I was fiercely making my point for a female lead, the guy in my group, who's being a complete ass lately, even though he is my friend, said that I should attend the Gay-Lesbian club in my school. He's an extreme homophobe, and apparently by wanting females in film, he made the assumption that I must be lesbian if I want equal opportunities for females and males. Obviously that must be the case.
This entire situation makes me angry. The fact that I'm labeled a lesbian for being a feminist and being a feminist is a bad thing just infuriates me. I probably shouldn't take this too seriously, especially this comes from a boy who wishes he were black, listens to only hard core rap (the stuff about objectifying females), and has had no sexual experience whatsoever. The closest he's ever come to a naked female is what he sees on TV.
Rant over.
